Something old, something blue…….
Earliest hints of Chinoiserie appeared in the early 17th century, in the arts of the nations with active East India Companies, Holland and England, then by mid-17th century, in Portugal as well. Tiny glazed pottery made at Delft and other Dutch towns adopted genuine blue-and-white Ming decoration from the early 17th century.
And we still love it for interior design, blending the many and varied blue & white fabrics in florals, stripes & plains, all tossed together with anything from French Provincial furniture, Asian antiques through to Australian antiques – or a blend of it all.
Here are some of our favourites that you will see in our on-line shop.
There is just something about the perennial pleasure of a ‘blue & white’ scheme, and Schumacher’s ‘BIRDS OF PARADISE’ 100% Cotton fabric does the job with aplomb. This trailing vine design, or should we describe it as ‘the floral you have when you don’t want flowers’, is truly majestic in all its blue & white splendour. It is also printed in a smart black & white combination.

Well, it has happened at last! After the dilemma of trying to choose a new fabric to recover our old king-size bedhead, coupled with instructions from the M.O.T.H. to ‘keep the green wall’, it is now installed. As you could imagine, I am exposed to every conceivable option on the planet, so when it comes to updating anything in our home, it takes a while to settle on ‘the one’ …..
The bedhead floral fabric look is slightly Retro (in fact I am sure I saw a similar floral on Darren & Samantha’s couch on a re-run of ‘Bewitched’ yesterday), but coupled with the sophisticated statement of a velvet trellis design, I think it works. I also had made, a new valance for the base of the bed, in a very dark olive/charcoal heavy linen skirt style – with inverted box-pleats in the centre of the sides and at the base corners, it’s really smart! And thinking I might need to add a couple of little cushions in a similar colour with some exotic trim!!! (and yes, the M.O.T.H. rolled his eyes at that comment…. more cushions?)
And the prize went to Schumacher HOT HOUSE FLOWERS Col. Verdance for the bedhead, and IMPERIAL TRELLIS VELVET Col. Chartreuse for the large pillows. Phew….. it was a tough decision, but we are completely over the moon and thrilled with the fresh new look.
A Happy Homemaker…… Alison x

‘ORCHARD’
This charming design by Alison Gee, ‘ORCHARD’ was inspired by Morris & Co’s mediaeval tapestries which were woven at Merton Abbey. Small groups of flowers are depicted within a setting of fruit trees.
‘KELMSCOTT TREE’ – Print & Embroidery
The inspiration for the design ‘KELMSCOTT TREE’ can be seen on the bed curtains surrounding the four poster bed situated in Morris’ bedroom at Kelmscott Manor. The curtains were embroidered in 1891 by May Morris and friends. The bed hangings were probably made for Morris’ birthday and each curtain took three months to complete. Kelmscott Tree has been painted by Alison Gee in the Morris studio and depicts a large tree surrounded by birds and flowers.

The “Intaglio” fabrics from ZOFFANY (as seen in July/August 2011 Vogue Living) are inspired by the distinctive ‘intaglio’ printmaking technique of incising a design into a hard surface to create dynamic fabrics. Three of these designs draw on the architectural lines of ancient and classical Rome, other designs depict illustrative maps, forests of sycamore trees and a sophisticated smaller scale design of repeated coronets. The image shows an armchair beutifully upholstered in 100% linen fabric ROME (priced from $165/m)
